There are a lot of bad actors in our health system with insurance companies being one of the worst! We should all think long and hard about the consequences of purchasing healthcare off of a spreadsheet as opposed to collaborating with your local provider community. It's the caregivers in our community that brings relief to our suffering. In our greatest hour of need the insurance policy is nothing more than a piece of plastic we hand to an admissions clerk. Let me ask you this: If your Spouse/Child/Parent were ill and you needed healthcare services, would you take them to the insurance company? No, most of us would all go to our local hospital. Remember, roughly 70% of hospital utilization is Medicare or Medicaid which means the reimbursement is a dictation, not a negotiation. Many of you will say these health systems are inefficient and wasteful which is often true, but likely overstated. How does this impact the people that live in these communities? Day after day we are seeing annual reports of hospitals and health systems that reflect massive losses primarily due staffing and supply-chain pressures leading to much higher costs. More reporting highlighting how fragile the real healthcare system truly is while insurance companies rake in record profits.
