Home storage has it's benefits because your not depending on some outside provider, who may go out of business, suffer a hack attack, suffer data loss from a natural disaster or fire, or god forbid a nuclear war, not that there are any bad actors out there today with nuclear weapons threatening that (Russia, North Korea).
Practically everything is stored digitally these days, and if your hard drive died decades ago, you didn't lose your irreplaceable family photos because they were physical media today it's a different story because so much depends on data storage.
This makes it far more important to do everything possible to mitigate that risk and have a data recovery plan in effect. The capacity of drives has grown exponentially since their inception, and the amount of data lost should a drive fail posed a smaller threat that drives of today with their far greater capacity. The very fact that manufacturers list a MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) specification is evidence that drives do fail and manufacturers know this. New model lines of a manufacturer may have a higher failure rate due to an issue with the design, a manufacturing issue, or components used in the drive can and have been points of higher than normal failure rate. As mentioned above, hard drive failure rates are not a constant.
